Data throughput: Maximum 5512 bps without compression. Approx 10500 bps with PMC using text. This is reached with approx +16 dB @ 4 kHz in an AWGN channel. Under the usual channel conditions this is 1.5 – 3 times faster than PACTOR 3

Compatibility: Backward compatible to PACTOR-1/-2/-3. Automatic negotiation during link setup.

ARQ protocol: Synchronized, similar to PACTOR 3, except 10 instead of 6 speed levels (“Waveforms”) and faster switching. Bandwidth is always smaller than 2400 Hz.

Channel equalization: Iterative adaptive equalizer for the coherent speed levels (5 – 10), RAKE receiver with maximum ratio combination for the splayed speed levels (2-4). Real-time multitasking operating system.

    For over 50 years, Micom has been the industry leading commercial HF Single Sideband radio. Led by Mr. David Carothers, Royal Communications International, Inc. have loyally serviced and supported Micom customers for over 30 years. As such, it is with great sorrow which we relay the factories’ announcement that the Micom line has reached its end of life. Production will end 30 September 2020.  After this date we will no longer be able to accept orders for Micom products.

    Accordingly, we request you place a "Last Time Buy" order prior to the end of September 2020. Although the Micom transceivers will be unavailable after that time, we will continue to supply compatible HF antenna tuners, antennas and various other Micom accessories as listed on our website.

    Royal Communications International, Inc. will continue to provide support and repair services for the Micom 3 series radios for the duration of remaining warranty. Repairs for Micom transceivers that are no longer covered under warranty will be available as long as commercially viable. With regard to Micom-2 series transceivers, unfortunately, we are unable to continue providing repair services, due to a lack of available spares and parts.

    While this message may have initiated on a somber note, we are pleased to announce our new partnership with Barrett Communication USA Corp. The Barrett 4000 series transceivers are inter-operable with Micom transceivers, certified by JITC to MIL-STD-181-141B and are NTIA compliant.  The Barrett 4000 series transceivers include key differentiators from the Micom and competing transceivers in the market. Namely, built in IP networking, color touchscreen display, removable/remote-ready control head, USB port for easy upgrades and programming, and several other advanced features. Barrett Communications Pty Ltd., was founded in Australia, and through growth and acquisition have had a presence in the United States for 40 years. 

    Additionally, we are excited to announce the 4000 series radios are now manufactured in the United States, specifically to meet the demanding requirements of our federal, state and commercial customers. The user-friendly Barrett 4000 series radios boast a (6) six week or shorter lead time, this combined with Royal’s class leading technical and sales support, full-service capabilities and a USA factory, you can be assured of fast and reliable support.

    During the summer June-July 2017, pilot Brian Lloyd commenced his round-the-world flight to commemorate Amelia Earhart’s route eighty years ago in 1937. The two month flight followed Earhart’s historic equatorial route. Royal Communications International, Inc. was honored to support Brian throughout his expedition.


    “I chose the Micom3T transceiver for my historic recreation of Amelia Earhart's flight due to its robust construction and outstanding reputation for reliability in a harsh environment. While the control head is mounted in the cabin and lives in a more benign environment, the receiver/transmitter unit resides in an unheated and unpressurized avionics bay where the temperature may vary from +45C to -20C and the altitude may top 24,000 feet. In spite of this harsh environment the Micom3T performed well. 


    But even the best equipment can fail and I did experience an intermittent failure of the receiver/transmitter unit. A single call to Royal Communications had a replacement unit on its way to me on the other side of the world in a day. Clearly the emphasis was to get my communications back up and running reliably as quickly as possible. I am extremely pleased with the level of support I received. The replacement unit operated and continues to operate reliably.
